Los Alamos National Laboratory Intellectual Property Policy

The Laboratory's ability to use the results of its own scientific research and to effectively meet its congressionally mandated technology transfer mission depends on how well it protects its intellectual property. This intellectual property includes the inventions, discoveries, software, drawings, and technical know-how of Laboratory staff.

The Technology Transfer Division works with inventors/authors and the Laboratory's Legal Counsel to identify, legally protect, and manage LANL’s intellectual property to enable the development of partnerships with industry. Such partnerships have a positive impact on both the regional and the national economies, while simultaneously expanding the Laboratory's intellectual property portfolio and generating resources for Laboratory programs through licensing and royalty income.

LANL employees agree to report any potential intellectual property developed during their employment at the Laboratory when they sign their employment agreement with Los Alamos National Security, LLC.
